Pitch was not feeling well. He’d been feeling very ill during the night, according to Pitchiner, though whether it was from a migraine or Proto had snuck him some of his cooking, it couldn’t be said. Jack only knew that neither Pitchiner, nor Pitch’s brother Piki, would be able to watch over him while they were off at their classes. And neither of them wanted Proto within an inch of Pitch. “Especially not when he’s like this.” Piki had hissed, as he had stared down his cousin, who in the end had made a show of giving a mock-offended sniff, before declaring that he had his own errands to attend.
So Jack had offered to stay with Pitch.
“It- it’s not any trouble at all.” He had assured both Pitchiner and Piki. “I mean, I don’t have any classes today. And I can be quiet. I- I won’t be any bother, at all!”
Piki had surprisingly seemed hesitant at first, but had given in at the end. He had given Jack a piece of paper with some different phone numbers, with Piki’s being at the very top. Along with this, he was given some simple advice.
“Pitch might seem a bit… out of it.” Piki explained to Jack, “and he might say things that seem… strange. But don’t let it put you off. He gets like that sometimes, if he isn’t well. Like he’s not really paying attention to his surroundings… but if something else should happen, like if he shows signs of seizures or anything like that, don’t hesitate to call for help.”
Jack had nodded dutifully, ignoring a curl of worry in his gut, as the others eventually left. Pitch was still asleep in his bedroom, and Jack decided to occupy himself by making them some tea, that he decided to put in a thermos. That way, Pitch would have something to drink whenever he woke up properly.
Pitch didn’t wake up until nearly lunchtime, and when he did, it was pretty much how Jack had been warned. He was wrapped in a blanket, and his eyes were tired and blank, as if he was more of a sleepwalker than actually awake. Jack watched him carefully, as the other shuffled towards the couch, where he first sat down, and then with a heavy, tired sigh, laid down on the couch.
“Uhm, h-hello Pitch.” Jack said quietly. “I- I hope you slept well?” It was more of a polite question than anything, because judging from the other’s very tired expression and pale face, he hadn’t. Jack swallowed awkwardly, before he continued. “Uhm… Piki and Pitchiner had class today, but- but I didn’t, so I stayed to- to watch you. I hope that- that’s okay.”
Pitch had by now just curled up on the couch, and had closed his eyes, not really responding. He didn’t look too comfortable however, and Jack decided that at least he could try and make certain of that. So he went and got a cushion for Pitch’s head to lay on and a blanket that would keep him warm.
Pitch jerked slightly when he felt the blanket covering him, and he blinked a few times, before he looked up at Jack and seemed to register his presence at last. “Oh… Hi Jack.” He managed in a strange, drowsy voice. “When did you get here?”
Jack smiled faintly at that. “I- I’ve been here a few hours.” He said, “I- I don’t have any classes, so I- I thought I’d stay here. Is- is that okay?”
Pitch blinked slowly, then nodded a bit before giving an exhausted yawn. “I- I think I’ll just nap… sorry to be a poor host like that.”
“It- it’s okay, I don’t mind.” Jack assured the other. “Would- would you like a pillow for your head?”
Pitch nodded and succeeded in pushing himself up a bit, so that Jack could put the pillow down for him. As Jack got the pillow into place, he accidentally brushed Pitch’s cheek a bit, which made Pitch jump slightly. Jack pulled back quickly, thinking he might have hurt the other somehow and was ready with a stammered apology, when Pitch spoke up, his voice sounding even stranger than before, as if he was speaking from somewhere far away.
“You walk the same path, but split on the half way. He gets stuck in the past, while you move on. You both return to one another and together you become strong.”
Jack blinked in confusion, then froze in surprise when Pitch gave a heavy, exhausted sigh, his head flopping down on the pillow. When Jack checked on him, he found to his relief that Pitch had simply passed out.
But those words… what in the world had that meant? And who was ‘he’ that Pitch had talked about?
Maybe Piki would know something about it. For now, it didn’t seem like Jack needed to call anyone. So he carefully settled by the table, where he began to work on his own homework.
