440 years since she had last been out and about really was far too long, Tooth thought. Having to go out herself to collect teeth again, even if it had been because her own fairies had been kidnapped, had given her back the taste for it.

She could still organize her fairies, even if she was out in the field herself, and it was a wonderful feeling to do so again.

Except this night. Tonight there was no moon. Even if it hadn’t been cloudy, and looking like a chance of rain (at least in this part of the world), the moon could not be seen. It was only the thought that the other Guardians would have her back if something happened, that made Tooth feel more secure as she flew through the night, her next target being a lost canine in a house of four, 2nd on the right after this roundabout…

Baby Tooth, who had taken to following Tooth on her rounds, suddenly gave a startled squeal and flew up right in front of Tooth, chittering wildly as she pointed down to the roundabout. Tooth halted in the air, blinking startled before looking down.

If Baby Tooth had not pointed it out, she would probably not have realized it sooner. A familiar black figure was currently walking around the roundabout. Or rather, was staggering, though Tooth did not pay attention to that until she had flown down and got close enough to see that.

“Pitch!” She snapped, her feathers bristling instinctively. “How dare you show yourself! What do you think you’re doing!?”

Pitch Black, the Boogeyman, paused in his step and gave Tooth a long, almost unnerving owlish stare. Then he slowly blinked, before squinting a bit, as though he wasn’t quite certain what he was looking at.

His behavior felt so out of character, that it made Tooth feel uncertain. She pulled a bit away, hovering more above than before. And still Pitch just stared, though he didn’t fully turn to try and follow as she hovered around him. Instead, he tried to lean his head back as far as possible, before he lost his balance. Tooth gasped when Pitch began to flail, and then cringed when he landed flat on the ground, a hard ‘oof’ escaping the dark spirit.

Something strange was going on.

“Why’sh ther’ a wall on my back?” Pitch suddenly asked, and Tooth had to take a moment before deciphering what he had said.

“Pitch, you- you just fell over. You’re on the ground.” She tried to supply, and then could only watch slightly baffled as the Boogeyman looked like he was trying to think about her words, frowning hard as he did so.

Then he seemed to decide the best idea was to try and roll over. Which only resulted in him getting his own long legs tangled in his own robes. Which in return prompted Pitch to try and roll over further, giving an annoyed series of grunts as he did so, until he hit the edge of a sidewalk, which finally made him lay still, looking more frustrated yet also rather out of it.

“Pitch…” Tooth finally asked. “Are you drunk?”

“No offischer!” The dark spirit practically barked, making Tooth jerk in surprise. “Im a pershe- perver- perpectly SOBA!

Tooth instinctively shushed him at that, glancing around at the houses. Even if most humans would be unable to see Pitch, the children might wake up and see her… and that train of thought made her pause.

Unable to see Pitch… Because no one believed in him.

She thought back to how she had been losing her own feathers, and how North had been feeling his age.

On one hand, a small part of her thought, she really shouldn’t be pitying the Boogeyman, because he had brought some of this on himself. But on the other… She couldn’t bring herself to leave him like this.

“Baby Tooth, could you do me a favor and find that canine tooth?” She told her mini fairy. “I think… I think I need to bring Pitch to North’s place.”

Baby Tooth squeaked indignantly, but Tooth shook her head firmly.

“North will be far more capable at figuring some of this out than I. And that way, we’ll have Pitch somewhere, where he won’t cause trouble… drunk or not.” The last part was added as she glanced down at Pitch, who had gotten himself rolled over so he was now on his stomach, while idly trailing his fingers across some cracks in the asphalt.

Baby Tooth still looked doubtful, but she finally gave an accepting chirp. She would take care of the canine without any trouble.

“Thank you.” Tooth said with a smile, “I’ll see you soon.”

She then flew down and began to try and pull Pitch upward a bit, so she could grab him around his chest, though that turned out rather awkward, as not only was Pitch incredibly heavy, but he was also very awkward to handle.

Baby Tooth watched in concern, as her queen at some point managed to get Pitch maneuvered around so they were face to face, as she felt that would make it easier to pick him up- only to squeak in surprise when he flopped forward and buried his face in her chest feathers.

“Soft…” He mumbled idly, and of all things began to nuzzle her, making Tooth’s face go bright red.

“Tha- that’s enough of that!!” She exclaimed, before she pulled him away and instead managed to get it done, so that he would be resting his head on her shoulder instead.

It did not help completely however, as he instead began to nuzzle her there, sighing in pleasure as he did so.

“Mmm… you’re warm.” He murmured, earning a flustered squeak from Tooth, as she barely managed to get out a snowglobe, that she had gotten from North in case of emergencies.

“NORTH’S PLACE!” she squealed, perhaps a bit too loudly, as it made Pitch flinch away in surprise. She took the opportunity to grab him fully before throwing the globe. Once the portal opened, she set off, yanking Pitch right with her and through the tunnel, which lead them straight into North’s office.

The Guardian of Wonder looked up in surprise as Tooth and Pitch appeared, and barely got a chance to react before his fellow Guardian practically threw Pitch into his arms.

“IfoundPitchlikethisIthinkhe’sdrunkfromlackofbeliefIthoughtyoushouldknowaboutitandIneedtogocollectteeth!” Tooth rambled off of her, before she darted right out of the nearest window.

North stared after her, then looked at Pitch who just gave him a dazed half-smile.

“Tha’ wash fun, c’n we ride ‘gain?” He asked, before he promptly passed out, his head dropping on North’s shoulder as he began to softly snore.

“What.” Was all North said.
